Kombi Conversions and Van Lining

We regard lining and sound deadening as the 'Foundation' of a conversion. If you get this wrong, then everything from here onwards will be affected. So many people think you can just throw a bit of glue and carpet at the walls of a van and it will look OK....yet we see so many poorly executed lining jobs that its shameful to think people accept such poor workmanship.

Its not exactly difficult, but a bit like plastering a wall....it takes time to get the skills and little tweaks that make it look professional.

The first stage in nearly all our work is lining and sound deadening. This usually starts with stripping the vans lining and flooring out. Or in the case of a factory Kombi, its removal of the seats and mats.

Next stage is to clean and prep the metalwork. If its a new van or Kombi, this would be to 'key' the metalwork with a scotch pad. Then degrease with IPA. Any holes are filled and silver taped up to stop road dust migration over the coming years. Any screw holes from previous ply lining are painted and filled to prevent corrosion. New ply panels where appropriate are made using quality BB grade latvian birch 4mm ply. (BB grade means both surfaces are free from any knots or holes and any voids are cut and spliced with a new section of wood).

The jack support is carefully removed from the n/s rear arch to allow neat carpeting.

Sound deadening in to form of 'SKINZ' is applied in  strip format to all panels, rear doors and sliding door. In a standard lining package we budget around 7 sheets of skins to be applied in 3 inch strips. Full coverage is not required to significantly improve the sound deadening of a panel. However for customers who wish to perhaps add a bit more coverage, we are happy to add more and apply our own custom cut wheelarch sound deadening kit.

Once the appropriate amount of 'skinz' are applied, a 6mm Dodo mat extreme is cut to shape and applied to cover almost every available space within the open panels. This has not only a high thermal insulating quality, but due to the nature of the foam, it also adds significantly to the sound deadining that is already applied.

Now the remaining void is filled with a non absorbent dacron based insulator that will add an air gap in the insulation layers.
